Concept and drawings for the Marian Chapel, a small chapel space off the side aisle in the Catholic Cathedral, St. James in Seattle, WA. Adding a wall to the east of the chapel, it created an intimate space, quiet and enveloping, apart from the vast cathedral. Using light and smell as the medium of design, the simple bronze candle holders support aromatic beeswax candles, illuminating the dark space as people arrive to light their candle. The chapel has been spiritually moving to thousands of parishioner and visitors, both Catholic and non-Catholic since its dedication over ten years ago. ![]() |
