MODULAR WORKFORCE HOUSING

Sited in the commercial core of Bremerton, WA, this steel modular project provides 56 units of new workforce housing. The five-story building uses an innovative steel modular building system.

atelierjones was asked to complete Permit Drawings for the modular project after the already completed Construction Documents were in for L&I review. Redesigning and simplifying the project, atelierjones worked extensively with the offshore factory to develop shop drawings and led the process to secure the highly technical Labor & Industries Permit for the modules with the State of Washington Factory Assembled Structures division as well as local entitlement and Building Permits from the City of Bremerton, WA.

The 350 sf units, included kitchen, bath, laundry and a high-end murphy bed to allow for maximum flexibility for inhabitants. Two different basic modules were developed, in studio and two-bedroom configurations, along with their ADA versions, resulting in four different types.

South-facing balconies were incorporated into the design, along with built-in shading elements and window coverings, and fifth-floor amenity spaces with large outdoor roof decks. Although many of these design features were abandoned in the final project, the intensive research and development on this project greatly furthered atelierjones’ commitment to modular construction as a way to push the construction forward.
