MASS TIMBER MODULAR COTTAGE

atelierjones is working with the Clallam County EDC to develop a modular cottage/DADU prototype for Washington State. The cottage is designed to use thermally modified cross-laminated timber produced locally at the Port Angeles Composite Recycling Technology Center. This CLT uses coastal western hemlock, harvested locally by the Makah tribe on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. Western hemlock is an underutilized wood species that is only made structurally viable through the thermal modification process, which gives the wood the dimensional stability. Creating a market for this otherwise-neglected species will create tribal jobs, promote better forest management, and provide a new, local source for building material.

The modular cottage designs build on the experience of our Sierra House prototypes, taking advantage of mass timber’s efficiency in prefabrication. atelierjones is currently leading the pre-approval process for a 2-bedroom, 800SF plan that would be viable as a DADU or a 4-6 unit cottage court development under Seattle’s new zoning changes.
